Twitter To Target Users Based On Browsing Activity

Twitter is experimenting with new advertising techniques and formats.

In a recent announcement the company announced their plans to start targetting their US users based on their web browsing activity.

The new “service” is aimed at US based Twitter users so Europeans should not be impacted:

So if you’re a European Twitter user you shouldn’t have to do anything..

But if you are in the US it’s quite easy to disable this new form of targetting.

  1. Login to your Twitter account via the web interface.
  2. Go to your account settings
  3. Uncheck the box labelled “Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits”
  4. Click on the “Save changes” button at the bottom of the page

Social Network Wars Explained

Social media networks want more users. Of course if you’re trying to grow your social network then it makes sense that you use your users’ existing connections .. So a lot of social networks tap into the data available via Twitter, Facebook and other services.

Of course by doing this they can upset each other .. end result you see social networks blocking access to each other. Sometimes it’s pretty petty, but it’s still fascinating to watch.

The guys over at Hootsuite used a Game of Thrones style analogy to visually represent what’s been going on:

Twitter Sells Tweets

With most social networks the users are the product.

In the case of Twitter one of the problems the company has been struggling with is how to actually make money from it all ..

So selling their content ie. their users’ tweets appears to be one of the solutions.

According to an article on RWW Twitter has sold the data to Datasift and has other companies lined up to buy the same data.

So not only is Twitter claiming ownership of the content, but they’re also happily ignoring any privacy concerns users might have..

Expect privacy advocates to get very vocal on this.

The Social Network On Release In Ireland – What Do People Think Of It?

The social network

The Social Network is on general release in Ireland and the UK

Last weekend The Social Network went on general release in the UK and Ireland.

It’s currently playing in most of the cinema chains across Ireland and seems to have been well received.

Have you seen it?

If you have, what did you think of it?

Seemingly Mark Zuckerberg isn’t overly impressed with it, but then again I doubt if many Facebook users are impressed with the latest revelations regarding privacy issues on the popular social networking platform.

Facebook the Movie?

It’s not enough that Facebook and its founder get splashed around in the mainstream media day in, day out .. now Hollywood wants us to watch a movie ..

There’s a couple of versions of the trailer floating around.

The first one (below) gives a few headlines and doesn’t show any real action:

The second one is a bit more revealing:

I’m not sure when it’s going on general release..

So will you be going to see it?

Apart from the social media addicts and gurus, will it attract a “normal” audience?

Christmas Is A Time For Sharing With Your REAL Friends

Social media networks; Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace etc., etc.

How many of your “friends” are actual friends? How many of them actually care about YOU?

If you’re completely caught up in the “follower count race”, then you’ve probably already entered “social media hell”.

But.

There is light at the end of the tunnel

You can disconnect.

You can reconnect with real people. I know this may sound shocking, but you could try to actually interact with a real person for a change.

Forget about vampires, random farm animals, mafia members or fantasy beasts (Twitter is infested with unicorns.. )

Removing yourself from all the social network sites takes time, so some nice person has actually automated the process – the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine does it all for you

Here’s how it works:

So there you are. You can save yourself from social media. You can get back your REAL life.
